Last week I visited St Vedast Foster Lane, one of my favourite City churches very close to St Paul’s Cathedral and also Goldsmiths’ Hall.
I noticed a strange connection between two signs in the church, one inside saying ” The family vault of John Jones” and another, on a man-hole just by the door saying “John Jones Patent, Chelsea, London”.
I remembered showing this to the Rector a few years ago and asking if he was aware of the connection – he hadn’t even noticed!
I love the garden of this church in particular for the unusual pieces in the wall, not just the family vault, but also:
- A section of Roman pavement found under a church now gone called St Matthew Friday Street
- A bust sculpture of a man in profile the famous sculptor Jacob Epstein
- A tablet covered in cuneiform writing donated by Agatha Christie’s husband
The church website is here, well worth a visit.
