Battle of the lifts

Today I had a chat with the very friendly receptionists about the amazing lift in their property called Blackwell House, managed by Inigo property and just on the edge of the Guildhall Courtyard.

They mentioned the very fine lift inside, and told me that they believed it is the oldest working lift in the City of London – I had to have a look!

I have taken some photos (with their permission) and am trying to find out any more information about its age, as if it really is from the 1890s it could even be the oldest working lift in London – currently this is claimed by Claridges from 1896, and if they have any older evidence that would be amazing.

I’ve tried to find information about the site of Blackwell House itself too, and can only see these map references from 1893-96 – the building is on the lower right side of the Guildhall Yard, above where it says PH which I believe means Public House.

Clearly there is a building on the site, but no name.

I note there is a sign in the lift stating R Waygood and Co.

However this is by appointment to HM the King which would be from a later date than Claridges’ once, although they are recorded as providing lifts from the 1890s in this link.

I will keep you informed as events unfold.
