Brutal History

This is Salters’ Hall, an ultra Brutalist design by Basil Spence dedicated to an ancient Livery company – dating back to 1394, originally managing the salt industry and associated trades where chemical action was required

In time it extended its scope to cover the whole chemical industry – as it does now.

New celebrates old is a constant in the City, no wonder a Phoenix inscribed Resurgam is the only word on the exterior of St Paul’s cathedral.

And this is the garden next to it, made by my friend Barry with the late great designer David Hicks.

The minotaur sculpture in front of, much like Theseus in the maze, has moved around the City at least four times since I have worked here, including on the highwalk, in the Barbican next to the lake – let’s hope it stays here a bit longer.
